In this TechTuesday edition, we will be discussing the Homestyler app.
Between COVID-19, stay-home orders and spring home projects, now is a great time to discuss the Homestyler App. Homestyler is for all levels of home designers. Whether you're just trying to pick a new piece of furniture to place in your home, contemplating changing wall color or updating your flooring, this app can help you make decisions.
The AR, or augmented reality, portion of the app enables users to view their home on their phone or tablet in real time. While viewing the user can then add real furniture or decor items to the room and place them. Take a screenshot or snap an image to share with your family, friends, or the Homestyler community. Users can ask for feedback and share their ideas.
To test wall colors, wallpaper or even flooring styles, just snap a picture of the room and 'paint' onto your screen. The app automatically finds and fills in the lines for the user. Again, users are encouraged to save and share.
Have no home projects to work on but love to arrange furniture or design spaces? You can still thoroughly enjoy this app! Choose a blank room space and begin adding. Share your completed designs and compete in contests against other users.
This is definitely an app for entertainment. There are a few clear pros for people who want to utilize the app for a true home renovation. The AR feature works well and the wall paint feature is quite good. There are a lot of paint options to choose from and since the app is using a real catalog it would be simple to duplicate the color at your local paint store.
However, sizing objects within the AR portion of the app can be a challenge and may not be worth it to a serious designer. The wallpaper option seems fantastic, but we had trouble getting the pattern to actually appear and not just a blown up version of a thumbnail design. Considering that wallpaper is back on trend in home design, we would have liked to see this feature given more attention in the app.
Overall, expect to be entertained. And, if you're a math teacher, we're certain you can dream up all kinds of fascinating hands-on, real world math scenarios for your students!
